Who Needs Custom Foot Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are used to address a wide number of medical conditions. It can be part of a treatment protocol for chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and tendinitis. It can help relieve the pressure of a diabetic ulcer. Yet, more often than not, we use custom orthotics simply to correct biomechanical imbalances that lead to generalized pain. Flat feet, high arches, pronation, or supination are common conditions that can cause undue wear-and-tear on the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back—all the way up the biomechanical chain—if not addressed. Shoe inserts can also be used to delay or prevent worsening of conditions like arthritis and bunion development.

Why Go 4-D?

How Custom Foot Orthotics Work

While 3D printing technology has been around for a while, beloved in manufacturing for its impeccable precision, the slow printing speeds and lack of durable materials made it impractical for the orthotics industry. HP’s revolutionary Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer broke down those barriers by offering the ability to print fast with thin, comfortable latticework made from patented bio-compatible nylon printing powder.

When you come into our office, we’ll scan, measure, and perform gait analysis on your feet with Tiger and FitStation—a hardware and software platform powered by HP. Both sets of recommendations will go into creating a 3D printed orthotic unique to your individual anatomy, courtesy of HP’s speedy MJF platform.
